Pica Typeface (10cpi)
The Royal HH was released in 1952 as a successor to the popular Royal KMG Standard. It was named for Henry Hart, who patented the Magic Margin for Royal in 1938 and was immediately adopted in their Royal KMM Standards and Quiet De Luxe Portables.
I found myself hunting one of these beasts through its connection to one of my favorite authors- Charles “Hank” Bukowski, who used one of these exact models.
Much like Hank, the Royal HH wouldn't win any beauty contests...
But also like Hank, it's tough as nails, consistent, and loves a cheap bottle of whiskey.
(Wait. That's me. I love a cheap bottle of whiskey. Hah.)Let’s be honest: the Royal HH isn't going to win any mid-century modern beauty contests or secure a position in MoMA... It’s a 30-pound iron cinderblock of industrial, government-taupe determination, built to pull 24-hour shifts in smoke-filled 1950’s newsrooms and office pools.
It doesn't fold up, doesn't fit in a case or a backpack, and damn sure doesn't apologize for taking up half your workspace.
But if you want a machine that’s tough as nails, ruggedly consistent, and built to survive an absolute beating, you look at an office standard just like this.
Just ask Hank. (Well… you can’t as he finally succeeded in drinking himself to death, but you get the gist🍷)
Hank was famous for beating his Typewriters into submission. He pounded on keys with a frantic, wine-fueled determination, literally wearing out lesser typewriters until they became glorified boat anchors.
But the Royal HH was one of the few Typewriters heavy enough to hang with him.
Like Bukowski's prose, the HH is gritty, unpretentious, and completely unapologetic. It will hang with whatever you through at it an more.

**Note** This is a heavy-duty office standard typewriter. Please ensure you have a sturdy desk capable of supporting a 30lb machine. Local pickup at the shop is highly recommended, though shipping is available as well.
