1958 Olympia SM3

Olympia Professional Elite 11CPI

Rich White/Deep Burgundy Hardware

The Olympia SM series are arguably some of the finest ever produced. If you haven’t had the pleasure of using one, you’ll understand why after typing a few sentences.

This is a beautiful and rare color machine. It is only the 2nd I’ve come across in the past five years, and the only one featuring a special typeface.

The SM3 became the template for Olympias future in the portable Typewriter world. Improvements were made as the years progressed leading to this model, the SM4. The biggest change was the addition of TAB set/clear buttons to the side of the spacebar, other than that, it’s the same base design that has made Olympia Typewriters consistently ranked in the top 5 portables made for writers.

This machine features one of Olympias finest (and RAREST) typefaces offered in my personal opinion- Professional Elite. It’s a beautiful sans serif italic that is crisp and professional, but also whimsical and beautiful. Much rarer than cursive script or even regular italics, this was the first Olympia I’d acquired with it.

The SM3 became the template for Olympias future in the portable Typewriter world. Improvements were made as the years progressed, but the base design remained largely the same. SM3s are consistently on the top 10 lists of best portable Typewriters ever made. If you’ve used one before, you understand why.

This beautiful white Olympia has been a part of my personal collection for about 6 years, and I have adored being its custodian the entire time.

But times dictate necessity, and it’s become essential to let some of my more prized machines go to new homes in order to keep up with the rising costs of, well… Everything. Sigh.

As with all my machines, it’s been stripped, cleaned, adjusted, and tested thoroughly to ensure it’ll hang with anything you throw at it.

It is an excellent typing machine, the Professional Elite typeface(font) is a crisp, concise, and stunning italic sans serif at 11 characters per inch. The action is quick, tight, and the carriage shift has been adjusted to be light as a feather. It has a brand new platen recovered by the fine folks at J.J. Short & Associates, so the imprint and feel is as close to what it was intended to be in 1958 as possible.

Aesthetically, it’s simply stunning. The white gloss paint is nice condition, with some slight signs of use here and there that seem to add to the aesthetic rather than take away. The 50’s were the golden era of Typewriters, and you really don’t get much classier than the SM3 base design. The distinct silver “panzer” case has some staining on the inside that I have been unable to mitigate, but other wise is one of the finest conditions I’ve seen on one. The hammered silver paint is in immaculate shape, it latches as it should, and makes a great companion for this beautiful machine.

If you’re looking for a beautiful example of German engineering, you cannot go wrong with an Olympia SM, and this one was owned by someone that not only works on Typewriters, but LOVES them.

This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter. It has been lovingly cleaned, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with you for decades to come if properly treated. In addition to the new platen, the frame bushings have been replaced, feed rollers rejuvenated, alignment adjustments made, and all pivot/friction points cleaned and oiled.

It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;

YOUR CHOICE of;

A BRAND NEW solid black or red/black bicolor ribbon available in cotton or nylon mounted on vintage metal spools, a reprinted original owners manual, the typewriter, its handsome hammered silver hard case, an OFFICIAL Nashville Typewriter sticker and hand-typed note from me, the typeface text sample, and even a few sheets of paper to get you started on your path to analog independence and distraction-free writing!

Shipping is FREE in the continental US via UPS ground shipping, international quotes available upon request.
