1966 Olivetti-Underwood 21 ✨Rare Typeface✨
RARO Cubic(Techno) Pica Typeface (10 cpi)
After dominating the market for most of the 40s, Underwood made some poor business decisions that led to Italian based company Olivetti buying them out. Olivetti’s buyout plan was for brand recognition only, every machine released after the companies “merged” into Olivetti-Underwood was an Olivetti design.
That’s not a bad thing, however… Olivetti made some REALLY awesome machines, and this one is no different. Under the redesigned body and Underwood name is an Olivetti Studio 44, a workhorse machine originally release in the early 50s.
The Underwood 21 aka Studio 44 is not a small portable.
In fact, that's likely the first thing you'll notice when seeing it. But that was the point;
Olivetti marketed them in their brochure as-
“When the performance of a standard typewriter is required in the space of a portable, the Studio 44 bridges the gap when a standard machine would be uneconomical and a personal portable unsuitable” .
This is NOT a flimsy machine. The mechanics and construction are very solid, and the angles update the classic Olivetti design into a machine fitting for the swinging sixties! The typing movement is based on the principle of "progressive acceleration", which lends a sort of softness to the keys seem to suppress the levers at work. It produces a beautiful imprint, and the softness of the keystrokes allow for comfort in writing long passages.
Olivetti was known for their beautiful design and high quality machines, this one, like most others, only lends credence to this.
** The Olivetti Cubic Pica typeface(font) is futuristic and easy on the eyes at 10 characters per inch. The semi sans serif, blocky design always gives me 2001 A Space Odyssey vibes! The paint is great shape, virtually no signs of use. The case is in great condition as well, this was a very loved machine.
This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter. It has been lovingly cleaned, oiled, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with whatever you decide to write with it.
It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;
YOUR CHOICE of an all-black, or black and red ribbon on original Olivetti metal spools(installed), a reprinted original owners manual, the typewriter & its handsome hard case, an OFFICIAL Nashville Typewriter sticker and hand-typed note from me, the typeface text sample, and even a few sheets of paper to get you started on your path to analog independence and distraction-free writing!
FREE shipping in the continental US, quotes available for international clients upon request.
