1937 Hermes Featherweight (Baby) *Personal Collection*
Elite Typeface (12 cpi)
This is a fun little machine I’ve had in my collection for several years, but it’s time to offer it up to a new home as I’ve been doing with writing iron not making the rotation.
This little Featherweight is a neat machine, and a precursor to the very popular and best selling Hermes Baby/Rocket.
This is fairly early model, lacking the later used folding line advance lever in favor of a pinch type advance. The Featherweight was marketed as the slimmest and lightest portable on the market at that time, weighing in at just over 8lbs and being slimmer than a large box of matches, it seems a claim that was easily backed up!
Regardless of its age, this little machine is still reliable and pleasant to use, the case lid doubles as a holder for the machine for it to used as a easy lap writer. Which makes sense as these little guys were widely used by war correspondents during World War II, and was the portable typewriter of choice for many well-known writers and journalists like; John Steinbeck, Tennessee Williams, Marguerite Higgins, Francoise Sagan, Max Frisch, Frederick Forsyth, Joe Brodsky and even Ho Chi Minh!
The amount of folks that loved the Featherweight/Baby only deepens my love for this simple Typewriter!
Being an ultraportable, this isn’t as full-featured as full sized manual portables or even later iterations of the Hermes Rocket. It lacks tabulation, color selection, and even touch control*. (*which feels like mostly marketing in most cases, I can barely tell a difference in most machines that offer it)
Quite simply- they type, and they do it anywhere. Meant for getting words on paper, no frills, no unnecessary extras. But what they do, they do very well.
Made by the esteemed Swiss company Hermes, this little machine is everything you could want in a compact, on the go Typewriter.
Mechanically, it types like very well- Smooth, snappy, and very light key travel for it being an ultra portable.
Cosmetically, it's a handsome little machine. Paint is in great condition and the keys are as well.
The elite typeface is classic, concise, and fits more in the page at 12 characters per inch
The travel of the keys is minimal and fairly easy, not typical on ultra portables as the linkages are shortened. It IS a monochrome Typewriter, meaning it only types with a solid color ribbon, so if you’re wanting two color capabilities, this isn’t the one for you.
The case lid is in very nice shape as well, even has the original leather handle and still does a fine job with protecting this great little machine! It even has new rubber feet to keep it from “dancing” while you’re laying your thoughts down on paper. :)
This is NOT an "as-is" typewriter.
It has been lovingly cleaned, oiled, serviced, and thoroughly tested to ensure it'll hang with whatever you decide to write with it.
It comes with everything you see in the pictures and more;
A brand spankin' new solid black ribbon available in cotton or nylon on vintage metal spools(installed), a reprinted original owners manual, the typewriter, it's case, an OFFICIAL Nashville Typewriter sticker and hand-typed note from me, the typeface text sample, and even a few sheets of paper to get you started on the path to analog independence and distraction free writing!
FREE shipping in the continental US, estimates available for international buyers upon request.
